Paramaribo – After having wandered around in the Surinamese political desert for more than seven years, Alice Amafo returned to her birthplace: Abop. The party of vice president Ronnie Brunswijk celebrated its 35th anniversary in Bronsplein in a grand way on Saturday, where the return of Amafo was welcomed with loud cheers by those present.
After leaving the organization in ABOP out of dissatisfaction with the course of events, she founded the People’s Party for Innovation and Democracy (VVD). The party only obtained 346 votes in the 2020 elections.

Amafo, who was allowed to speak during the festive meeting, noticed to be “not a dictator” and having responded to the call of the supporters to return home. In recent months she has been conducting an intensive media campaign and gave the impression with her VVD to participate in the elections of 25 May.
Dressed in a camouflage jacket and beret, Amafo stated that he was ready to fight against poverty and inequality in Suriname in the ranks of Abop. In addition to Amafo, former Minister Linus Diko also returns to ABOP.
During the meeting, chairman Brunswijk mentioned the names of a number of people who had left other parties to join his party. Among them is Sohmakoemarie Bahadoer, who was a candidate for the VHP in Para in 2020. The chairman of the Amazone Party Suriname was also present at the meeting.
Brunswijk told those present that ABOP participates in the upcoming polls with the main goal of coming back to the government, so that work can be done on improving education and making health care for everyone, combating poverty and improving the housing situation. “Everyone must be able to consult a doctor without paying,” the party leader cried. The aim is that ABOP will get more than one hundred thousand voters behind him on 25 May.
