WILLEMSTAD – The Brasami care facility on Curaçao, which provides support for individuals with addiction and mental health issues within the criminal justice system, is in a deeply concerning state. That’s the conclusion of the State of Law Enforcement 2024 report, which was presented to Parliament on May 5.
The report highlights severe structural shortcomings, including neglected maintenance, fragmented housing arrangements, and insufficient financial support from the government. The situation reached a breaking point this past Saturday when one of Brasami’s facilities on Rembrandtstraat had to be evacuated immediately due to the risk of collapse. Residents were temporarily relocated to other care facilities. One staff member sustained minor injuries during the evacuation.
Despite repeated warnings and discussions with relevant ministries, structural funding and support have yet to materialize. The report singles out the Ministry of Justice, which provides no financial contribution, even though Brasami performs a legally mandated role within the judicial framework.
There are, however, a few positive developments, including improvements in HR policy, lower staff absenteeism, and an increased involvement of volunteers. Nevertheless, the core issues of chronic underfunding and unsafe infrastructure remain urgent and unresolved, threatening the safety of both residents and staff.
Brasami’s leadership and supporting organizations continue to call on the government for immediate and sustained action to secure the future of one of the island’s most critical care institutions.
