The phenomenon of deportations increased in recent months due to strict migratory policies implemented by the US, intensified since Donald Trump’s return to the White House, on January 20.
These 91 migrants are added to the 914 Colombians who have arrived on national flights from the US in recent weeks.
In January, the mass deportation of undocumented migrants triggered a diplomatic crisis between Bogotá and Washington.
The clash between the two countries caused a series of sanctions by the US, which included the cancellation of appointments for visa procedures, tariffs on Colombian products and the cancellation of visas to officials of the Colombian government and their families.
In response, Petro announced reciprocity measures, such as the imposition of tariffs on products from the United States, in addition to asking US citizens who reside in Colombia in an undocumented way that regularize their situation.
Subsequently, the Colombian Foreign Ministry and the US government reached an agreement to receive deported citizens, ending the diplomatic crisis.
The crisis was overcome thanks to the work of the now ex-chancellor Luis Gilberto Murillo and the Colombian ambassador to the US, Daniel García-Peña.
