
Paramaribo – The Ministry of Defense has honored 24 women with a certificate of appreciation on the occasion of International Women’s Day, which is celebrated annually on 8 March. The ceremony, which took place under the theme “in femininity standing her ground”, was dominated by the role of women within the defense organization and their contribution to society.
The meeting was held on Friday in the Multifunctional Hall of the Ministry. International Women’s Day is a day determined by the United Nations (UN) and this year has the theme: “For all women and girls: rights, equality and empowerment”.

Defense Minister Krishna Mathoera therefore considered the importance of diversity and gender equality within the defense organization in her speech. “Women play a crucial role within our defense, not only in supporting functions, but also in operational and managerial positions. Their determination and perseverance deserve our appreciation, “the minister underlined.
Mathoera pointed to equal rights and opportunities for women and stated that it is essential that they get the freedom to realize their ambitions. She says that although important progress has already been made, there is still a lot of work to do to promote global gender equality. “Women have the power and competencies to lead and make a difference, not only within Defense, but in every sector of society.”
The commander of the National Army, Werner Kiu a sen, expressed his appreciation for the increasingly greater contribution of women within Defense. “Women are now represented in all departments within the Ministry of Defense and perform important functions, including the function of inspector general of the armed forces, a first in the history of our defense,” said the army commander. He also emphasized the importance of the Women, Peace & Security (WPS) policy-implemented since 2022-that offers women within Defense the opportunity to grow and actively participate in decision-making.
