A 29-year-old man was stabbed and chopped to death on Ariapita Avenue, Woodbrook, early yesterday morning.
David Stanley Gregior, aka “Cokes”, of C Trace Extension, Diego Martin, was stabbed several times.
Police said Gregior was a passenger in an SUV parked on Alberto Street, along Ariapita Avenue, around 2.10 a.m. when he was attacked.
He was earlier seen arguing with men he knew while he was seated in the vehicle.
One of the men then stabbed Gregior, who ran out of the SUV along Alberto Street, and was chased by the suspect.
His attacker caught him and as they struggled, Gregior was chopped on the pavement.
Police on patrol in the area near Frankie’s bar were alerted to the incident and found Gregior bleeding on the pavement on Alberto Street.
He was taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital where he was pronounced dead, a police report stated.
Several items, including a motor vehicle, were seized and taken into evidence, police stated.
When the Sunday Express visited Ariapita Avenue yesterday, a number of limers and residents said they were unaware of the murder, but two residents said the Avenue had become prone to violence, with one man saying “especially on Friday and Saturday nights”.
Another resident said he felt many people liming in the area at night behaved aggressively.
He said he believed excessive alcohol consumption played a role, but that was not always the case.
“Sometimes a person was not under the influence and you may talk to them, and they quickly want to look to argue because they simply find you should not tell them anything,” the resident said.
The resident said people living in the area were also affected by noise and littering.
He recalled having to call police three times in one night because one man was making noise outside his home.
Littering was also a problem and “utterly ridiculous”, the resident told the Sunday Express.
A younger resident who did not want to be identified said: “Ever so often, there are fights like late at nights or early hours of the morning, but I would not say it is a very violent area for the most part, just because of how much people are out here.”
Despite this, the man cautioned those coming to the Avenue between now and Carnival to be careful.
Snr Supt of the Port of Spain Police Division Raymond Thom said yesterday that because of the activities in the Woodbrook area, it was highly patrolled by the police who maintain a level of visibility.
Thom said patrols will continue, especially during at night.
In January 2024, a 19-year-old Curepe woman was shot dead around midnight while seated in a car on Carlos Street, metres away from Ariapita Avenue.
In 2023, two men were shot dead while liming outside a bar on the Avenue.
