Ecuador’s vice president, Verónica Abad, expressed her concern for the country’s political climate on Sunday, noting that she does not perceive an atmosphere of “democratic joy.” After casting his vote in the city of Cuenca, Abad said that citizens are “obfuscated” and urged the government to reflect on the current situation.
He also claimed that “in this crisis of violence that Ecuador has, a crisis of obfuscation, the atmosphere is not that of a democratic joy at this time.”
Abad, who went to his voting center with a bulletproof vest and personal security, also reiterated his desire to return to his charge as vice president, after the judicial ruling that orders his restitution.
Judge Nubia Vera granted a period of 48 hours to President Daniel Noboa to allow Abad to re -entate to his offices, after accessing them was prevented.
Vera was even presented at the facilities of the Vice Presidency, which are militarized, finding decrees that establish the designation of ABAD for commercial affairs in Türkiye.
This was not the first occasion that access to his office to the vicemandataria has been denied. He had already tried to enter on December 23, 2024 without success. Abad emphasized the need to comply with the court order and comply with the Constitution.
This controversy climbed to the point that the president appointed another person, not elected at the polls, as vice president, while he focuses on the electoral campaign.
This Sunday, more than 13.7 million Ecuadorians were enabled to vote in the presidential and legislative elections. The presidential candidates with the most likely to win are Daniel Noboa (National Democratic Action Party) and Luisa González (Citizen Revolution Party).
In case of any of these situations, a second round will take place on April 13. The new president will assume the position on May 24, for a period of four years.
