The Office of the Leader of the Opposition has expressed concern over the Engineers Bill due for its second reading before the National Assembly tomorrow. It says it contains several troubling aspects and weaknesses that must be addressed before its passage.
A release yesterday from the office of the Leader of the Opposition sought to make it clear that it fully supports the need for an Engineers Act to regulate the engineering profession, uphold professional standards, ensure public safety, and contribute to national development. However, it also holds the view that it is imperative that key stakeholders – including the University of Guyana’s Faculty of Engineering and Technology, the Guyana Association of Professional Engineers (GAPE), and all interested persons – be given the opportunity to provide meaningful input on this legislation.
The Opposition did acknowledge that that some discussions were held with GAPE in the past, but pointed out that those engagements date back many years. Further, the Bill now before the House contains provisions that it seriously doubts GAPE, other engineering professionals, and many Guyanese would endorse.
