Amsterdam – KLM is expanding its intercontinental network this summer with a new scheduled service from Schiphol to neighboring Guyana. From June 4, travelers can fly to and from Amsterdam twice a week.
KLM performs the flights under the flight number KL789 on Wednesday and Saturday with an Airbus 330-200. This device offers eighteen seats in World Business Class and 246 seats in Economy Class. The aircraft departs from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport at 10 a.m. and arrives at Sint-Maarten, where a short stopover is made, at 1 p.m. local time.
This flight then departs from Sint-Maarten at 2.20 pm and arrives at Cheddi Jagan International Airport at 4.35 pm local time. The return flight goes directly to Amsterdam and starts at 5.55 pm local time. The planned arrival is the next day at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport at 9.15 am.
Travelers who also hope that the new route to Georgetown offers a possible (cheaper) alternative to the trip to Suriname will be disappointed. The rates start at 1,026 euros per single way for an Economy Class ticket, including one checked suitcase.
Regional Travel junction
The Guyanese Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo said in 2023 that KLM was very interested in flying on his country. Guyana strives to develop as a junction for regional travel. “It is therefore important to get as many airlines as possible on the route to Georgetown,” said Jagdeo.
Partly fueled by the developments in the field of oil extraction, that works very well. Many foreign companies have now spread their wings to Georgetown, including British Airways, United Airlines and American Airlines. The latter started in September 2021 with flights on Suriname to and from Miami, but after a year and a half the plug again pulled out of this route because there were insufficient passengers.
