The Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) of the Ministry of Public Works has dismissed the “grossly misleading and mischievous” claims made in a Facebook post on Saturday, falsely accusing the Minister of Public Works and MARAD management of engaging in corrupt practices regarding the granting of cabotage exemptions.
In a statement issued yesterday, MARAD firmly rejected the allegations, asserting that the process of granting cabotage exemptions was neither clandestine nor improper, as was suggested. Accord-ing to MARAD, the issuance of such exemptions is fully in line with Section 10 of the Guyana Shipping Act, which governs the operation of foreign vessels in the country’s waters. These exemptions are granted only after a careful evaluation of the applicant’s circumstances and are subject to strict terms designed to ensure maritime safety, environmental protection, and security, the statement said.
