As of this Friday, drivers who transit by PR-53 will find bidirectional porches (Tolls), With a 70 cents rate, at kilometer 3.8, in CEIBA, and kilometer 34.5, at the South Humacao station, the company announced Metropists.
The rate that will be charged to the vehicles that transit in both directions will involve, in practice, an increase with respect to the payment of $ 1.30 that, to date, applied in both toll stations of the tolls of the Express José Celso Barbosa. Until today, the rate was only paid by the drivers who were in the direction of the north, in the case of Ceiba’s toll, and in the south direction, in Humacao Sur.
“The implementation of bidirectional porches, as part of our plan to improve the island’s toll system, benefits all drivers, since it provides a more fair and equitable system because the user only pays in the address that travels, unlike now where he pays for both directions”he said Luis Javier RodríguezSenior Manager of Metropist Technology.
In a press release, the Operating company of the PR-5, PR-20, PR-22, PR-52, PR-53 and PR-66 highways said that its contract contemplates the conversion to bidirectional porches in all existing toll stations. According to Metropists, in the case of PR-5 and PR-22, where the porches were implanted since 2017, a remarkable improvement in the fluidity of traffic has been observed, as well as a significant reduction in accidents with victims by not requiring that drivers decrease speed.
“We are very satisfied with the positive results we have obtained in recent years. In PR-22, for example, we have achieved a reduction of more than 75% in accidents with victims, thanks to our continuous improvements. We are convinced that future projects on highways will have equally positive results ”Rodríguez added.
Metropistas said that the modernization plan under the concession contract projects an investment of $ 100 million in infrastructure improvements throughout 2025.
The next toll station where the bidirectional porch will be enabled will be at kilometer 6.7 of the PR-20, in Guaynabo. Subsequently, the same will happen in the toll of Caguas Norte, in the PR-52, as well as in the stations of Juana Díaz, Salinas and Húcar, on dates to be defined.
