The government will gift Bahamian hurdler Devynne Charlton with $10,000 after she broke a 16-year-old record in the women’s 60 meters (m) hurdles indoors, Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Mario Bowleg announced today.
“In a time when crime has become the focus, one must shift and highlight the recent sporting achievement of a young Bahamian woman,” Bowleg said in the House of Assembly.
“A small, but powerful country that continues to push above its weight has inked its name in the world record books once again, proving that sports changes lives and this archipelagic nation is among the best in the world.
In running the stunning time of 7.67 seconds for the gold medal, Charlton took down the former world record of 7.68 seconds that was set by Susanna Kallur, of Sweden, in 2008.
Charlton achieved this feat at the 116th running of the Millrose Games at the Nike Track and Field Center at The Armory in New York.
Bowleg said the Charlton’s accomplishment serves as a testament of hope and motivation for the entire nation.
“In recognition of her outstanding accomplishment, it is my honor to announce that my ministry will be presenting Ms. Devynne Charlton with a $10,000 token of appreciation.
This is just a small gesture compared to the magnitude of her achievement, but it symbolizes our unwavering support and admiration for her remarkable talent and dedication.”
