“YOUR SAFETY and security is our number one priority,” acting Police Commissioner Junior Benjamin said yesterday as thousands of masqueraders get ready to take over the streets of the country today and tomorrow.
Speaking to the Express on the cusp of Jouvert leading into Carnival Monday, Benjamin assured that “all hands are on deck”.
He told the Express that officers from specialised units, who would not normally carry out patrols, will be on duty both today and on Carnival Tuesday on the streets and also quieter residential areas in Trinidad and Tobago.
Municipal police would be out as well as personnel from the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment who he said were already on patrols with the police as a result of the ongoing state of emergency.
He added that traffic wardens will also be on duty as well as private security officers who would be doing what he described as “confidence patrols”.
Those heading into Port of Spain today may however be subject to roadblocks.
“We are going to be out there from very early to ensure that persons conform to the normal modus operandi,” Benjamin said.
“We will be doing our normal checks of those coming into the capital and we will be deployed to ensure that persons would be coming into the city without any weapons,” he said.
“We will be everywhere. Land, sea and air,” beamed Benjamin.
“Police will be out there for your safety and, as is my mantra, your safety and security is out number one priority,” he said.
