STATING that she was taking into consideration the safety of 65-year-old businessman Robert Bell, Justice Lorna Shelly Williams denied him bail when he appeared in the Gun Court on Wednesday, and remanded him in custody until July 9.
Bell was recently arrested and slapped with multiple charges after a video went viral on social media showing him assaulting a nurse, even going as far as stomping on her head while she was on the ground.
The video triggered widespread attention and condemnation.
Bell’s attorney, Christopher Townsend, explained what happened in court, as media access was restricted.
He said bail was refused “on the grounds that since the video has gone viral, for his safety, it is best he remains where he is”.
Townsend said the judge stated that once all the documents pertaining to the case are available, Bell’s legal team would be at liberty to file another bail application.
“…Which we will do. We will also address the question of his safety on that occasion,” Townsend said.
Bell was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm; assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm; assault at common law; possessing a firearm with intent to commit a first schedule offence; and possession of a firearm with intent to cause injuries.
