The sight of uniformed military personnel, a red carpet, and national leaders dressed in their finest drew many onlookers to the ceremonial opening of Parliament in Kingston on February 13.
It appears that the event, which is filled with tradition and formalities, remains a major attraction for onlookers each year.
An employee from the Jamaica National Heritage Trust (JNHT) left her office to watch with colleagues, saying the elegance and pageantry never lose their charm. Another JNHT worker found the ceremony fascinating and was particularly interested in seeing the various costumes worn by the politicians.
The event, dating back to 1962 when Jamaica became independent featured mounted troops announcing the arrival of the Custos of Kingston, Hon. Steadman Fuller, who represented the Governor General. The occasion also included an inspection of the Guard of Honour, royal salutes, and the national anthem.
Among the spectators was a grandmother explaining the event’s significance to her granddaughters.
“I bring out the children because they always want to see when Parliament is opening so they get the opportunity now to see it. I can introduce them to the Prime Minister and the other honourables in the Houses of Parliament because the school will ask them certain questions on it,” said the woman, who opted not to give her name.
The ceremony marks the start of a new parliamentary year, highlighted by the Throne Speech, which outlines the government’s policies and plans for the 2025/2026 financial year.
