A River Sallee man with a history of run-ins with the law has been fined more than EC$20,000.00 and handed a suspended prison sentence after police discovered a firearm and ammunition in his possession during a recent operation earlier this week in Pearls, St. Andrew.
40-year old Yacouba Toussaint who claims to be a farmer and is from River Sallee, St. Patrick appeared before Magistrate Kina Marrast-Victor at the Grenville Magistrate’s Court on Monday where he was sentenced after pleading guilty to charges of Possession of Firearm and Possession of Ammunition.
The court ordered Toussaint to pay EC$15,000.00 for the firearm offence within eight (8) months, or serve 18 months in prison.
He was also fined EC$6,000.00 for the ammunition charge, to be paid within 14 months, or face 12 months in prison in default.
In addition to the fines, a two-year suspended prison sentence was imposed on the accused.
This means that if Toussaint commits any offence within that period, he will automatically serve two (2) years in prison.
The penalties stem from a police operation conducted on Saturday, May 10, 2025, during which officers discovered one Glock pistol, two magazines, and twenty rounds of ammunition in Toussaint’s possession.
Toussaint is no stranger to law enforcement.
Approximately one year ago, he and a female companion, Aminata Harry, were charged in connection with a Mother’s Day shooting on May 12, 2024, in River Sallee, St. Patrick.
According to the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF), the pair were allegedly involved in a confrontation with police officers during that incident.
Toussaint was formally charged with Possession of Firearm, Possession of Ammunition, and Causing Public Terror, while Harry, a 30-year-old unemployed resident of River Road, St. George, was charged with Obstruction.
Toussaint’s attorney, Jerry Edwin, has confirmed that the 2024 matter is still pending before the court.
The RGPF continues to investigate gun-related crimes, and is urging the public to support ongoing efforts to reduce the illegal use and possession of firearms across the tri-island state.
