Last week he died in Asunción, Paraguay, Rodolfo Gill Duarte, engineer and military. Last October he had reached 103 years, remaining vital, firm and clear in ideas and his expression. A deterioration of just a few weeks preceded his death.
Rodolfo Gill Duarte was, at the end of the 90s of the last century, Ambassador of Paraguay in Venezuela; But that is not what he says most about her life and what she represented for Venezuela and for Venezuelans.
Rodolfo Gill came to Venezuela in 1956 as part of the Paraguay diplomatic representation staff. A short time later (1958), and to the extent that the Alfredo Stroessner government showed the dictatorial tendencies that progressively accentuated until reaching the worst extremes, being in Venezuela, he chose to suffice, thus beginning, thus, a long period of more than 30 years exile here.
For the policy of Venezuelan democracy to prohibit the exiles of “the dictatorships of the south”, Rodolfo Gill Duarte entered the template of engineers of the MOP. It was pleased to hear the interest, and even the tenderness, with which he approached the public works of roads in which he collaborated, here, in the country that welcomed him, and in which, with his work as a public servant, and the Solidarity and disciplined collaboration of his wife, also Paraguaya, raised a family (6 children) who, after those 30 years, was necessarily Venezuelan. All grandchildren were born in Venezuela.
In 1989 the Paraguayan dictatorship fell. He then bit the affective conflict: Paraguay and Venezuela. He returned to Paraguay, was a senator in the constituent; But the roots here and the affection for the country claimed their fueros. He returned to Venezuela as ambassador. We can testify to its fidelity with the country; “What a problem! A planned project that has not been reconstituted ” – he told me, with Venezuelan anguish.
He followed a second return to Paraguay from his raiginal love; And there, in the midst of the recognition of his countrymen, he spent these last years, to the recent widowhood and a few more years. We have to testify to a life attached to the exercise of the best personal, family and citizens, and how much he wanted Venezuela.
