WILLEMSTAD – The Stichting Gehandicapten en Revalidatiezorg Groep (SGR) is taking steps to reduce the waiting list in the disability and rehabilitation care sector by opening a new residential center on Kaya Aron. The center will provide a safe living environment for six individuals with autism and 24 clients with intellectual disabilities.
The project, in collaboration with the Sociale Verzekeringsbank (SVB), aims to address the current housing crisis in the healthcare sector, where 299 people are currently on the waiting list, urgently needing care and accommodation.
According to SGR, a protected living environment is crucial for individuals with autism, as they benefit from structure, guidance, and a predictable environment. The center will provide professional caregivers who will offer support in areas such as communication, self-sufficiency, and behavioral guidance. This initiative aims to improve the quality of life and provide a more stable situation for both the clients and their families.
The total cost of the project is estimated at over 3.3 million guilders per year. The cost of housing a client with autism will be 403 guilders per day, while the care for someone with an intellectual disability will amount to 278 guilders per day. SGR emphasizes that the financial aspect is not the primary focus of the project, but rather addressing the significant care needs on the island.
