Sprint legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce made a surprise donation of US$50,000 to her alma mater Wolmer’s High School For Girls on Thursday.
The contribution was made during a celebration at the school where Fraser-Pryce was gifted with anothe Key to the City of Kingston.
The olympic champion said what prompted the donation was when she found out that the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation was having the event at the school, she wanted use the oppourtunity to “bolster the support” she have for Wolmers.
In keeping with her beliefs, the donation, valued at an estimated J$7.8 million, was made to promote education and build a pathway to success for the next generation of girls.
“Wolmers has contributed to who I am as an athete and what i’ve been able to do off the track as well. Mrs Montague is the principal here at Wolmers High School for Girls [and] is also a director of the Pocket Rocket Foundation and she has been so for over the last 10 years, so giving back to the institution was just the right thing,” Fraser-Pryce said.
“There were alot of times where I needed help with different things and I [was] able to get that being here at Wolmer, so for me…it wasn’t difficult to do,” she added.
Fraser-Pryce first step foot on the campus as a student 26 years ago back in 1999 to 2006.
