The president of the USA, Donald Trump, announced on Monday the imposition of 25 % tariffs on all imports of steel and aluminum in the North American country, which will be added to existing rates on metals.
The largest sources of importation of American steel are Canada, Brazil and Mexico, followed by South Korea and Vietnam, according to data from the Government and the American Iron and Steel Institute, cited by Reuters. Due to a wide margin, Canada is the largest primary metallic supplier in the US, representing 79 % of total imports in the first 11 months of 2024. While Mexico is an important junk provider and aluminum alloys.
During his first mandate, Trump imposed 25 % rates on steel and 10 % to aluminum, but, later, he granted several business partners free of tariffs, including Canada, Mexico and Brazil.
This new round of tariffs occurs after Trump signed at the beginning of this month the executive orders to apply 25 % rates to imports from Canada and Mexico, narrow commercial partners and US allies, before deciding that the Tariffs would be delayed a month. In addition, it promulgated an additional 10 % tariff on imports from China, which led to this country to apply retaliation measures.
Likewise, a formal advertisement on reciprocal tariffs is expected to “all countries” be carried out in the next few days and enter into force “almost immediately”, matching the tariff rates applied by each country to the US.
