Boxer Tyler Christopher said he is determined to deliver an eye-catching performance when he fights on the biggest stage of his professional career in Staffordshire, England, next Thursday [March 6].
Christopher will aim to improve his record to 10-0 when he meets English journeyman Jordan Grannum in a six-round middleweight contest on the undercard of the St Patrick’s Professional Boxing Dinner Show at the Premier Suite in Cannock.
Several boxing luminaries will be in attendance, including former world champions Barry McGuigan and Richie Woodhall, with the main event featuring England’s Cliff Henry against Ireland’s Ryan Whelan in a Midlands Area light heavyweight title showdown.
“It will be great to show my talent in front of these prestigious boxing names,” Christopher told Bernews. “I’m fired up and ready to go. It’s what I’ve been waiting for.”
Stepping up from small hall shows to a bigger stage has relieved Christopher from the burden of having to sell tickets, allowing him to focus on his preparations at the D&A Boxing School of Excellence in Stirchley, Birmingham.
Although the slick southpaw is an overwhelming favourite to defeat Grannum, who has won 12 and drawn five of his 168 bouts, he insists he is ready for a stiff test from his 32-year-old opponent.
“He’s a durable, experienced journeyman,” Christopher said. “I’ve watched a few videos of him, so I know what to expect.
“I’m looking to defeat him and start fighting some bigger names in Britain. I want to get on a TV show.”
By his admission, Christopher has fought cautiously in his previous outings and said he intends to go “toe-to-toe” with Grannum as he pursues the second technical knockout win of his career.
“I’m expecting to mix it up a bit,” he said. “Usually, I play it safe and fight on the outside, but I’ll be looking to sit in the pocket and explore different avenues. I know I can fight different styles.
“You must balance between fighting safely and exchanging with your opponent. It’s something I’ve been working on.
“I’ll look to go toe-to-toe with him during the latter stages of the fight.”
It has been a busy period for Bermuda’s professional boxers, with Andre Lambe and Saundre “Dash” Simmons achieving TKO victories on the Fight Night card at The Shed in Dockyard this month.
Lambe successfully defended his American Boxing Organisation [ABO] regional belt against American Jimmy Williams in just three rounds; meanwhile, Simmons made light work of American Patrick Pierre, stopping him in the opening stanza.
“Everyone knows me and Andre are former team-mates on the Bermuda national team, and I always look out for his results,” Christopher added.
“For ‘Dash’, it was his first fight in Bermuda, and he produced a great performance. I’m proud of him.”
