The West Indies Group of University Teachers (WIGUT) has accepted a 6% increase in salary. The acceptance follows weeks of protests and withholding grades of 20,000 students at the beginning of the semester.
WIGUT has instructed their membership to stop all protest action and submit grades for students at the St. Augustine Campus by midnight on Monday, February 10th.
WIGUT President Dr. Indira Rampersad said the membership voted to accept the 0-0-3, 0-0-3 percent wage increase for two negotiation periods, 2014-2017 and 2017-2020, on February 6th.
WIGUT initially asked for a 24% increase and back pay for 2014-2020.
In 2023, 4% was offered and rejected. On January 30th, the Finance Minister increased the Government’s offer to 6%.
UWI St. Augustine Campus Principal Rose-Marie Belle Antoine expressed relief to have industrial peace restored but agreed the loss of academic staff remained a concern.
The UWI Principal said the institution will be working toward a job evaluation. She said although UWI is the Number 1 university in the Caribbean and in the top 3% in the world, they are way behind institutions in T&T and the region in terms of remuneration.
