RICARDO ‘BIG 12’ Brown, Jamaica’s leading heavyweight boxer who is now based in Canada, will be gunning for his 13th victory in as many professional bouts on Friday when he takes on American Colby Madison, whose record is 11 wins, seven losses and three draws, in a fight scheduled for eight rounds at the Great Canadian Casino/Resort in Toronto. The card is being presented by Tyler Buxton’s United Boxing Promotions.
Brown, who is 12-0 in his career, has an outstanding knockout record. Eleven of those victories came by way of knockout or technical knockout,
and it was only in his last fight on October 19 last year, against Adam Kolarik, over eight rounds, that he was taken the distance for the first time.
His connections were happy that it went all the way, however, as it gave him the opportunity to put his jabs on show, and pointed to the fact that he can go the distance in his fights. Brown, too, was pleased that he was able to box his way to a unanimous points decision, stating after the fight that “putting in some rounds with a tough opponent felt good “.
Brown has the tendency to go after his opponents from the first bell, but this changed in the fight against Kolarik, as he used his jabs more than usual, and showed that he is not a one-dimensional fighter. His lead trainer, Dewith Frazer, said then that he was happy that Brown used his jabs effectively and had got some rounds under him, “as this would be good for his future progress”.
He also told The Gleaner that he is sure that Brown will be using his jabs more in this fight than he did before.
“He has a great jab, and, if he uses it effectively, he will set up his opponent for the knockout, if and when it comes. I am looking forward to a very good performance from him, as he had a good camp,” said Frazer.
Brown goes into the fight with an age advantage. He is 35 and Madison is 41. He also has a height advantage, he is 6’ 7 1/2” tall and Madison is 6’ 3”. He will quite likely also have a weight advantage, as he is bigger than his opponent. Not having fought since October, he said that he is looking forward anxiously to his first fight in 2025, and that he wants to start the year on a positive note.
“I am fit and ready to rumble,” he said.
