The Caricom Classic Team Tournament concludes today with Guyana obtaining mixed results. A total of nine teams participated at this 2025 tournament.
These included stalwarts from Trinidad, Barbados, Jamaica, Suriname, and Dominica. Guyana, being the host country, fielded three teams: A, B, and a junior Under-16.
Guyana has a lot of school-aged children playing chess as a hobby, and competitively, and therefore the exposure would have been excellent for progressing in the game.
The next Caricom chess tournament would be held in 2027 thereby avoiding the biennial Olympiad, which is scheduled for 2026. Guyana has been a regular participant at the Olympiad since 2014. The Caricom Chess Classic is the brainchild of Shiv Nandalall, who is a director of the Guyana Chess Federation.
