WILLEMSTAD – Parents traveling from Curaçao with minor children are increasingly being asked to present a marriage certificate at the airport, a requirement that has been in place since 2021—yet remains poorly understood by both travelers and some officials.
The rule states that when traveling with children under the age of 18, parents must provide a marriage certificate to confirm the family relationship. In cases where only one parent is traveling, additional documentation is required, including written consent from the non-traveling parent.
Due to conflicting information on government websites, confusion has grown, occasionally resulting in missed flights and travel disruptions for families.
“There’s a lack of clear and consistent guidance, which creates unnecessary stress for travelers,” a concerned airport official said.
Although the Ministry of Justice is not directly responsible for airport control procedures, it has now pledged to work with relevant authorities to improve public information and clarify the travel requirements.
The ministry aims to prevent further issues by launching a coordinated public awareness campaign, ensuring that both travelers and staff are fully informed ahead of time.
