
HOLGUIN, Cuba, Mar 3 (ACN) The Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment in the eastern province of Holguin implements a broad agenda for the protection of the ozone layer, which includes the reduction of refrigerant gases and ecological education.
Norkis Ochoa Aguilera, head of the Department of Instruments and Environmental Policy and specialist of this program stressed to the Cuban News Agency that since 2020 some 29 entities have received the National Award Free of Ozone-Depleting Substances (SA0 by its Spanish acronym), among them industries and hotels.
She specified that 76 companies have also signed the voluntary declaration for the reduction of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and the elimination of hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), which includes the use of science and technological innovation with environmentally friendly practices.
The expert stressed that these projects include environmental education activities with children and young people from different levels of education, who participate in environmental sanitation workshops, tree planting, collection of raw materials, children’s contests, among other actions.
In 2025, the Cuban ozone layer protection program celebrates its 30th anniversary and the province is currently in the process of updating the inventory of equipment containing HFCs and HCFCs and their replacement alternatives in accordance with current international standards.
The Caribbean island is one of the signatory countries of the Montreal Protocol, approved on September 16, 1987 in that Canadian city, with the aim of promoting the gradual substitution of chemical and industrial products that are harmful to nature.
