Jamaican dancehall artiste Mr Vegas (Clifford Smith) has apologised to the people of Trinidad and Tobago for Beenie Man’s (Moses Davis) comments about doubles and says he looks forward to enjoying “singles, doubles, and triples” on his next visit to the country.
The “Heads High” singer admitted that he had never heard of doubles before the controversy sparked by Beenie Man’s comments.
“Attention: On behalf of the dancehall community, I would like to apologize to the people of Trinidad and Tobago for anything our speeky spooky brother, Beenie man, may have said that offended your culture. Personally, I did not know what “doubles” is, but now I know.
I can assure you that the next time I come to your beautiful country, I will be eating singles, doubles, and tripples with a cold glass of Mauby. One love Trini massive!” Mr Vegas stated in a post to his Facebook page.
“King of the Dancehall” Beenie Man said that while doubles is “nice,” he does not eat it because stray dogs do not eat it.
Beenie Man made the comment during an interview on the Drink Champs podcast with hosts N.O.R.E. (Victor James Santiago Jr) and DJ EFN (Eric Fernando Narciandi), which premiered on Saturday.
During the podcast, Beenie Man was asked what the best island in the world is, and he predictably answered his homeland, Jamaica.
The hosts then asked what the best island was apart from Jamaica. Beenie Man repeated Jamaica but added, “I love Trinidad.”
With the mention of Trinidad, Beenie Man was asked if he eats the popular street food, doubles.
“I love Trinidad but I don’t eat doubles, because dogs don’t eat doubles and I don’t eat anything that’s dogs don’t eat. I don’t eat doubles,” Beenie Man said.
Beenie Man mentioned that he tried eating doubles two or three times while in Trinidad.
“It (doubles) is nice but once I threw it to the dog and the dog didn’t eat it…dogs eat chicken, dogs eat fish, dogs eat dumplings…but the dog won’t eat the doubles,” Beenie Man said.
“I was on the roadside and threw it to a stray dog and the dog didn’t eat it,” he said.
Earlier in the podcast, Beenie Man was asked to choose between Calypso and Soca, but he wasn’t able to pick a favourite.
Beenie Man’s interview on the podcast has already surpassed 151,000 views.
