Dear Editor,
As I read the poem “Song of myself” by Walt Whitman, I was drawn strongly to the words “Whoever degrades another degrades me….” I hold this as a valuable extract from the poem. It reminds me of the many times I have seen persons being degraded, especially by those in power. On each occasion I lost respect for the perpetrator and felt ashamed and degraded. I was forced to describe those degrading others as of “great power with small minds.” It is my belief that none should be degraded publicly or otherwise. Certainly, there exists less painful approaches for eliminating the act of degrading others.
Sincerely,
Krishna Nand Prasad
