Ministry of Justice Regrets That Undocumented Migrants Continue to Risk Their Lives
WILLEMSTAD – The Ministry of Justice has received information from the Coast Guard, reporting a tragic incident in which a boat carrying undocumented migrants capsized near the coast of Curaçao. So far, the Coast Guard has rescued 10 people, and the search continues for more individuals who were possibly aboard the vessel. Those rescued have been transported to Curaçao Medical Center for necessary medical treatment.
The search operation is ongoing to locate any missing persons involved in this tragedy. The Coast Guard, Police, and other emergency services are working together to find and assist all those still unaccounted for.
The Minister of Justice, recognizing the efforts made, expressed gratitude to all emergency personnel and organizations involved in the rescue and those continuing the search. Their dedication and efforts are crucial in saving lives and managing crisis situations.
The Minister also reiterated the dangers of attempting to enter Curaçao illegally by boat. Such journeys are highly risky and life-threatening due to dangerous maritime conditions and the lack of safety measures on these types of vessels. The government strongly advises all individuals planning to travel to Curaçao to use legal and official migration channels. Authorities are working to ensure that there are clear and safe immigration procedures, and it is crucial to follow official routes to avoid tragedies like this.
Minister Shalten Hato, through the PATH organization, is making every effort to provide assistance to those involved in the boat incident, with the support of victim support services and other institutions to help guide and assist them in rebuilding their lives. Psychological, emotional, and practical support will be available for those who have gone through this traumatic experience. Additionally, a full investigation is underway to determine what happened and how similar situations can be prevented in the future.
Authorities will also take legal action against those responsible for human trafficking and/or smuggling, ensuring that those who orchestrated this dangerous journey face criminal prosecution and detention.
The Ministry of Justice remains focused on tackling illegal migration and is paying special attention to this case. In the framework of international efforts, the ministry is intensifying cooperation with other nations and international organizations to address this issue. Minister Hato will also be present at the upcoming ECLAC (United Nations Subdivision) conference on migration in March, where strategies for safe and humanitarian migration management will be discussed. The information and international collaboration gained from this event will be essential in shaping Curaçao’s local migration policies.
The Ministry of Justice is committed to taking all necessary steps to ensure security, justice, and assistance for those affected by this crisis. Minister Shalten Hato reaffirmed his commitment to protect human lives and raise awareness about the dangers of illegal migration. It is essential to educate the community about the serious risks involved in illegal travel and to encourage all individuals to migrate to Curaçao through legal and official channels.
