THE EDITOR, Madam:
I am writing to urge the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) to modernise its system for distributing life certificates to pensioners. Currently, these certificates are sent exclusively through postal mail, which has proven to be unreliable and inconvenient for many recipients. The NIS should adopt a more efficient and accessible approach by offering pensioners the option to receive their life certificates electronically.
The current system poses significant challenges. Many pensioners, including myself, often do not receive the life certificate in the mail, either because of postal delays, non-delivery, or other issues. This forces us to make unnecessary trips to NIS offices to resolve the matter, which can be particularly burdensome for elderly individuals or those with mobility issues. In an era where digital solutions are widely available, it is time for the NIS to embrace technology to better serve its beneficiaries.
By introducing an electronic option, pensioners could receive their life certificates via email or download them directly from a secure online portal. This would not only reduce the risk of lost or delayed mail but also save time and resources for both pensioners and the NIS. Additionally, it would align with global trends toward digital transformation in public services, making the process more efficient and environmentally friendly.
I understand that some pensioners may prefer traditional methods, and the postal option should remain available for those who need it. However, offering an electronic alternative would provide much-needed flexibility and convenience for those who are comfortable with technology.
I hope the NIS will consider this suggestion and take steps to modernise its life certificate distribution process. Such a change would greatly improve the experience for pensioners and demonstrate the NIS’s commitment to innovation and customer service.
