Saint Lucia’s track and field team has suffered a setback ahead of the Carifta Games, as rising sprint star Naomi London has been forced to withdraw. Her school announced on Tuesday that the young phenom’s much-anticipated return to regional competition is on hold due to injury.
The 18-year-old, a standout athlete at the University of Texas, was expected to compete in the 100m, an event in which she recently set a new national junior record.
London’s withdrawal is particularly disappointing given her strong Carifta pedigree. Two years ago, she made history as the first Saint Lucian to medal in the Under-17 100m and 200m events. After missing last year’s Games due to injury, expectations were high for a strong comeback.
London is one of two US-based track and field athletes named to Saint Lucia’s Carifta squad for the Easter weekend Games. Defending girls’ pole vault champion Naya Jules is the other. Three Saint Lucian swimmers are also heading from the US to the Carifta Aquatics Championships.
