Paramaribo – Coordinators of various resorts, chosen by the Independent Electoral Office (OKB), received a torque during an interactive session from Jennifer van Dijk-Silos, former chairman of the OKB. The primary task of the resort coordinators is to act as managers and coordinators for the supervisors in their resorts on election day.
The OKB writes in a press release that the Ressort coordinators are responsible for supervising the overall election process in their region and must ensure that all procedures are complied with according to the law and the applicable guidelines. “This means that they support, guide and ensure good communication between the polling stations and the OKB.”
“The presence and vigilance of supervisors make the difference between elections that are considered lawful and reliable and elections that evoke doubt”
During the session there was room for broad interaction and the discussion of points of attention of the work of OKB supervisors. Their crucial importance for the integrity, transparency and credibility of the elections on 25 May was emphasized.
Sentry Democracy
The OKB is authorized to designate supervisors who exercise and report. “They are the eyes and ears of the people and the guarantee that the elections are going according to the rules, without influence, without manipulation and without any form of irregularities.”
The focus of supervisors will be on important points of attention, including control of the mood process and accessibility for all persons, also for people with disabilities. “The OKB will keep a close eye on every stage of the voice process and at all times act as a sentry of democracy,” emphasizes OKB chairman Samseerali Sheikh-Alibaks.
According to him, every election is a touchstone for democracy. The confidence that the process runs fair and transparent must therefore be cherished. Sheikh-Alibaks: “The presence and vigilance of supervisors make the difference between elections that are considered lawful and reliable and elections that evoke doubts.”
