Paramaribo – The Youth Council Suriname (JRS) is full again. On Saturday, Shemar Rier was chosen with ten votes as the new chairman. He replaces Rajeev Goerdin, who was elected chairman in September 2023 after a tumultuous meeting on the possible acceptance of gifts by members to vote for a particular candidate. Goerdin finally resigned on November 30 last year.
The former chairman complained that there was hardly any quorum to hold meetings and that the deployment of the members was minimal. Since he took office as chairman, six members have entered the youth council. These members have also been replaced in recent months.
In addition to Goerdin as chairman, Xemilya Asanredjo, the deputy vice -chairman, also came from the JRS. On Saturday, Jeremiah Pinas was chosen with ten voices as the new deputy vice -chairman. Gracelynn Amautan, vice -chairman during the previous board, remains in her position.
At the public session held in the meeting room of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, 22 of the 29 members of the Youth Council were present. Two members have abstained from mood. The members of the JRS are on until 1 June 2026.
