President Donald Trump said he will announce on Monday that the United States will impose 25% tariffs on all imports of steel and aluminum, including those of Canada and Mexico, as well as other import rights later in the week.
Trump also reaffirmed that he will announce “reciprocal tariffs” – “probably on Tuesday or Wednesday” -, which means that the United States would impose import tariffs on the products in cases where another country has applied tariffs to US products.
Trump said he really wants Canada to become the 51st state in an interview broadcast on Sunday during the previous Super Bowl.
“I think Canada would be much better being state number 51, because we lose 200,000 million dollars a year with Canada. And I will not allow that to happen, ”he said. “Why are we paying 200,000 million dollars a year, essentially a subsidy to Canada?”
Trump has repeatedly proposed that Canada would be better if he agreed to become the 51st state of the United States, a perspective that is deeply unpopular among Canadians.
Trudeau said Friday during a session by closed doors with business and labor leaders that Trump’s idea of turning Canada into the 51st state of the United States is “something real” and is linked to his desire to have access to natural resources of the country.
“Mr. Trump is in mind that the easiest way to do it is absorbing our country and that is something real. In my conversations with him, ”said Trudeau, according to CBC, the public station of Canada. “They are very aware of our resources and what we have and want to benefit from them.”
In the interview, which was pre -recorded this weekend in Florida, Trump also said that he has not seen enough actions in Canada and Mexico to avoid the tariffs he has threatened to impose the two largest commercial partners in the country.
“No, it’s not enough,” he said. “Something has to happen. It is not sustainable. And I’m changing it. ”
