TRELLIS BAY, Beef Island, VI- The BVI Airports Authority (BVIAA) recently honoured senior Aviation Firefighters, Mr Richard Penn and Mr Kemuel Merry, ahead of their official retirement on December 31, 2024.
A press release from the BVIAA today, Friday, December 27, 2024, says the two officers began their aviation firefighting careers in December 1999 with the then Civil Aviation Department. In June 2006, they were transferred to the BVIAA.
Director of People and Culture Mrs Dawn U. Leonard said Mr Penn and Mr Merry have exemplified dedication and professionalism throughout their careers.
“Their service has not only ensured the safety of our airports but has also inspired many within our organisation,” she said.
Mrs Leonard also acknowledged the men’s mentorship of recruits as she told them, “Your legacy will endure through the many individuals who had the privilege of learning under your guidance over the years”.

Meanwhile, Director of Operations Mr. Kyle Cummings called the men pillars of the BVIAA firefighting team, “Their expertise and leadership have set a high standard for future generations of Firefighters and we thank you,” he stated.
Corporate Administrator, Ms Drusilla F. Fahie said it was important to recognise dedicated service. “We honour not just your outstanding careers but also your commitment to upholding our motto and the safety of the travelling public. You both are trailblazers and will leave behind a legacy that will inspire others who will walk in the part you lit,” she said.
Mr Penn and Mr Merry have also been credited with being instrumental in shaping the BVIAA’s firefighter protocols and ensuring its readiness for any emergency.
Both men thanked the BVIAA for providing an environment conducive to productivity and the advancement of their careers over the past twenty-five years, the release said.
