(This is a summary of the response of the government of the People’s Republic of China as published in its English language web site Global News.)
On Friday, China announced strong actions in response to new US tariffs. The US had imposed “reciprocal tariffs” on China and other countries. In reply, China said it will add a 34% tariff to all goods from the US, starting April 10. China also filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO), saying the US is breaking global trade rules.
Chinese experts said the US is using unfair methods that hurt international trade.
They called the US actions “bullying” and harmful to the global economy. Other countries might also take steps against the US.
China’s new tariffs apply from April 10. But if goods leave the US before that and arrive in China by May 13, they won’t be taxed extra. Existing tax breaks won’t change, but no exceptions will be made for the new tariffs.
China also took several other steps. It:
- Filed a lawsuit with the WTO,
- Put 11 US companies, including drone maker Skydio, on an “unreliable entity” list,
- Banned exports of certain goods to 16 more US companies,
- Started an anti-dumping investigation into medical CT tubes from the US and India,
China also said it will control the export of rare earth materials like samarium and dysprosium. These are important for high-tech products.
At the same time, China banned six US companies from exporting food and animal products to China. These include sorghum and poultry firms. China says it has found high levels of mold, dangerous drugs, and salmonella in their products.
This conflict started after US President Trump signed a rule creating new minimum tariffs on certain imports. China was hit with a 34% tariff. The US said it was for “fair trade,” but many countries disagreed.
Experts said the US tariffs violate global trade rules. They are based only on US law, not international agreements.
The president of Germany’s car industry group said this move puts the US at odds with the rest of the world. China warned the tariffs could lead to inflation and maybe even a recession in the US.
One Chinese expert said the US is blocking trade by pretending to be a victim. He said the US keeps using excuses like national security to stop fair trade with China. He called for both countries to solve issues through equal talks and cooperation, not threats and punishment.
[CT tubes, or Computed Tomography tubes, are key parts of CT scanners used in medical imaging. They create the X-rays that scan a patient’s body to produce cross-sectional images (like internal “slices”). They are expensive and critical to CT scanner function.
China says it has launched an anti-dumping investigation into certain CT tubes from the US and India, possibly to protect its own medical industry.]
